How to sell PDFs online in India (with UPI)

September 10, 2026 · 7 min read · By Fluxeta Team

You can sell a PDF in India today, take payment via UPI, deliver the file automatically, and generate a GST-compliant invoice. The whole setup takes about an hour if you already have the PDF ready.

The reason most people struggle is not the mechanics. It is that the tutorials online were written for a US audience with a Stripe account, and the advice quietly falls apart the moment your buyer taps GPay instead of a credit card. This walkthrough puts the Indian context back in.

What you need before you start

Four things.

  1. The PDF itself. Cleaned up, proofread, exported at print-quality (not screen). If it is a template or worksheet, include fillable fields where useful.
  2. A payment surface. UPI is non-negotiable. If your buyer cannot pay through GPay, PhonePe, or their UPI app, you are leaving 40 to 60% of Indian sales on the table.
  3. A delivery mechanism. Sending the raw PDF on WhatsApp is not this. You need a link that appears after payment and expires later.
  4. A price. Skip further down if you are stuck on this.

Optional but useful: a landing page (not required if you sell only through a payment link), and a GST number if you are above the threshold.

Step 1: Pick your platform

Four realistic options for India in 2026.

Instamojo. India-native. UPI, cards, netbanking. Simple payment links. Good for very small sellers who just need a checkout URL. Weaker on recurring subscriptions and no real storefront experience.

Razorpay Payment Pages. Free with a Razorpay merchant account. UPI Autopay works. No storefront, just a hosted page per product. Best if you are comfortable configuring things and want the lowest transaction cost.

Gumroad. Fastest zero-setup route. Global storefront, buyer-friendly checkout. Downside for India: they take a flat 10% platform fee on every sale, payouts land in USD (with FX and delay), and there is no native UPI Autopay for recurring buyers. Good for one-off sales to a global audience. See Fluxeta vs Gumroad for the deeper comparison.

Fluxeta. Purpose-built for Indian creators. UPI plus UPI Autopay, INR pricing, GST invoice per sale, custom domain on paid plans, and the storefront lives alongside your blog, newsletter, and course modules if you have those. 0% platform fee on your revenue. The Free forever plan covers a first product without a credit card.

Rule of thumb. If your buyer is in India and pays with UPI, use an India-first platform. If your buyer is in the US and pays with a card, Gumroad still wins on discovery. If both audiences matter, use Fluxeta or Instamojo for India and cross-list on Gumroad for the US traffic.

Step 2: Set your price

The Indian market has clear pricing clusters for digital PDFs.

  • ₹99 to ₹299: cheat sheets, checklists, small templates. High-volume, low-margin.
  • ₹299 to ₹999: how-to guides, mid-length ebooks, single-purpose playbooks.
  • ₹999 to ₹2,999: in-depth ebooks, workbook bundles, industry reports.
  • ₹2,999 to ₹9,999: expert playbooks with lifetime updates, exam-prep bundles, professional templates.

Anchor on the outcome your buyer gets, not your page count. A 12-page playbook that saves someone six hours of research is worth more than a 200-page ebook that reheats free content.

Step 3: Wire up UPI payment

The specific steps depend on your platform, but the concept is the same everywhere.

  1. Create a product in your platform's dashboard. Give it a name, price in INR, and upload the PDF file.
  2. Enable UPI in the payment methods. If your platform is Fluxeta or a serious Indian option, UPI is on by default.
  3. Optionally enable UPI Autopay if you plan to sell updates as a membership rather than a one-off. UPI Autopay is a mandate-based recurring pull that works from any UPI app. See our UPI Autopay guide for how the mandate flow works.
  4. Copy your payment link or embed the checkout on your landing page.

Sanity check on your own phone: buy your own product with your own UPI ID. If the mandate screen looks foreign or the checkout errors on GPay, fix that before you tell anyone about it.

Step 4: Deliver the PDF safely

The biggest mistake first-time sellers make: emailing the raw PDF as an attachment, or worse, posting a Google Drive link that the whole internet can share.

Serious platforms deliver via signed download URLs. The URL is unique to the buyer, expires after a window (24 to 72 hours is typical), and is invalidated if abused. Fluxeta signs every download URL automatically. On Razorpay Payment Pages you can wire this via a webhook and your own storage bucket. Gumroad handles this out of the box.

A layered approach that works for 95% of creators.

  • Watermark the PDF with the buyer's email address or order ID on delivery. Automatic on most platforms. The paying customer sees a small line of text at the bottom of every page. Casual sharers get exposed the moment their PDF ends up in a Telegram group.
  • Signed URLs with expiry (24 to 48 hours). If the buyer needs the file again later, they log into their account and re-download.
  • Download limit per buyer (3 to 5 fresh downloads). Enough for a lost-file recovery, not enough to be a bulk-share vector.

Skip full DRM (password-protected PDFs, encrypted readers). It creates more support tickets than piracy prevention.

Step 5: GST, invoice, and the boring legal bit

If your annual PDF sales cross ₹20 lakh (₹10 lakh in special-category states), you must register for GST. Sales below that threshold are optional but often worth it for the input-tax credit if you have platform fees.

Digital PDFs sold to Indian buyers attract 18% GST. Your platform should be generating a GST-compliant invoice on your GSTIN automatically. Fluxeta does this via Razorpay's invoicing layer. If you are on Gumroad, GST invoicing on your behalf is largely on you.

For DPDP compliance under the DPDP Act 2023, collect the buyer's email with clear consent language ("we will send your receipt and download link to this email"), and honour deletion requests. Standard invoice retention rules from the Income Tax Act still apply. Keep records for six years.

If you are unsure whether you need to register a proprietorship or LLP, the short answer for most solo PDF sellers is: no, you can sell as an individual under your PAN. Register a business entity once your recurring monthly PDF income crosses about ₹1 lakh, or when you take on a partner.

Common mistakes to skip

The five that come up most often in creator conversations.

  1. Selling only through Google Drive links. No receipt trail, no watermark, no expiry. Buyers do not remember buying from you six months later and pirates share the raw link.
  2. Pricing in dollars for an Indian audience. "$5.99" reads as foreign SaaS in India. Price in INR, always.
  3. Skipping GST invoices. B2B buyers will not buy from you a second time without one. Even individual buyers appreciate a clean receipt.
  4. Emailing the PDF as an attachment. No download expiry, no re-issue flow if they lose the email, no watermark. Use signed URLs.
  5. Discounting instead of bundling. A ₹499 PDF sold at a 50% "launch discount" trains your audience to wait for the next discount. A ₹499 PDF bundled with a checklist and a template for ₹799 anchors value up.

Your minimum viable launch

If you are staring at this article and want the absolute shortest path.

  1. Sign up for Fluxeta's Free forever plan. Or your India-first platform of choice.
  2. Upload the PDF. Set price in INR.
  3. Enable UPI in payment settings.
  4. Copy the product page URL.
  5. Post it once on the platform where your audience already lives (Instagram Story, Twitter thread, LinkedIn post, WhatsApp Status).
  6. Watch what actually converts before you build a landing page.

Most creators overbuild before launch. The PDF that sells on day one is usually the one where the buyer sees the value in five seconds and taps GPay in fifteen. Everything else is polish.

Fluxeta ships with UPI Autopay, INR-native pricing, GST invoicing, and signed download URLs out of the box. If you would rather start selling this weekend than wire together five tools, start free.
